When it comes to New Year's resolutions, I'm torn. On the one hand, I love a fresh start. I'm well up for Mondays. The first of every month gets me pumped. And that moment when you step outside and the air smells different so you just know the season has changed. That's so so energising.

And then there's January First - the inspiration junkie's biggest, shiniest new leaf of all. It should be amazing, but I can't help noticing that the particular ritual around New Year's resolutions is really a bit of a beat up.

Think about it. You're up all night on the 31st guzzling champagne and walking for miles because there's no chance of hailing a cab... Then you wake up and it's New Year's day... You're bleary eyed... You're under-slept (or in my case, crazy jet lagged)... And you're faced with the task of cataloguing every aspect of your character/relationships/body/career with which you're dissatisfied... in preparation for the making all kinds of promises about how to morph into the sort of person who does and is better. Now is it just me, or does that sound, umm, super negative? Surly that's no way to start off our big beautiful new year!

What I propose instead is this: Instead of focusing on where we've been going wrong, let's resolve to do things that float our boats in 2013! Here are a few skills and activities I'm looking forward to trying my hand at this year:

  • Poach the perfect egg
  • Do one unassisted pull-up
  • Make a salad with veggies grown in my own garden
  • Embroider something
  • Go paddle boarding (ideally in calm, non-bull shark infested waters)
  • Play bridge
  • Master the halo braid

I have a good feeling about 2013 so it feels right to start off on a purely positive note. I wish all of you heapings of happiness, health, inspiration, and fun in 2013. Happy New Year!
